On a Mission to Provide Culturally Aligned Elderly Services

The mission of the Tohono O’odham Nursing Care Authority (TONCA) is to bring our elders back home so that they can enjoy dignified living in an environment that preserves our traditional Himdag while still receiving all of the healthcare and personal care services they require. Our mission is to deliver a continuum of elderly services that preserves and improves the quality of life of our elders, and enables them to enjoy the best possible physical, spiritual, emotional, social, and intellectual wellness.

TONCA similarly strives to give back to our Nation by providing educational resources and employment opportunities. Our staff members receive access to onsite housing options, as well as training and educational resources to support their professional lives.

Our Traditional Values and O'odham-Centered Approach

In all that we do, TONCA defers to our traditional values and way of life when defining our approach to providing elderly services. We embrace O’odham-centered care, as each of our elders is unique and has their own needs. Our values are as follows:

  • We believe that the Tohono O’odham culture and Himdag are essential for the well-being of our elders and all of our People.
  • Our elders should not have to relocate off the Nation in order to receive elderly services, but rather they should be able to stay in our community and maintain contact with loved ones.
  • We provide healthcare and other elderly services that are designed to be in harmony with the cultural values and traditional customs of the Tohono O’odham Himdag.
  • We believe that good health entails more than the mere absence of medical conditions. Rather, it is dependent upon a person’s physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and intellectual wellness.
  • We will always respect and encourage the right of our residents to practice autonomy and self-determination.
  • We provide elderly services in accordance with our elders’ wishes, such as by delivering care in our Nation’s language.
  • Our facilities are resource-efficient and strive to return resources to our Nation whenever possible.
  • We believe that life, death, and dignity are concepts that are defined by one’s culture, and that all People deserve to live and die with dignity and while receiving compassionate, culturally appropriate care.

Meet the Whole Team

The TONCA Team and Board

The Tohono O’odham Nursing Care Authority Board of Directors is comprised of knowledgeable individuals who possess experience in both health and business. The Board is responsible for developing and implementing policies necessary to carrying out our vision, while delegating the daily operations of our facilities to our staff members.

The staff members at TONCA include licensed and registered nurses, certified CNAs, certified caregivers, and other caregivers, along with a range of administrative and support personnel who oversee the day-to-day operations of the Archie Hendricks Sr. Skilled Nursing Facility and the Tohono O’odham Elder Assisted Living Residence. Each of our nurses, CNAs, and caregivers is highly capable and well-trained, with a compassionate mindset and an unwavering dedication to working in the best interests of our cherished elders. Our staff members empower our residents to live their best life.
