Caring for Our Elders
The Tohono O’odham Nursing Care Authority (TONCA) operates a skilled nursing facility and an elder assisted living residence. These are designed to empower our elders to receive the care they need without having to leave our Nation. We care for our elders in a way that preserves our traditional Himdag and our cultural values.
Our O'odham-Centered Care Services
Across both of our facilities, TONCA embraces a O’odham-centered mindset, delivering individualized services that empower our residents and respect their right to self-determination. We foster a supportive atmosphere with collaborative decision making and a mission to continually improve our care delivery.
Archie Hendricks Sr. Skilled Nursing Facility
Our skilled nursing facility is a Medicare/Medicaid dual-certified, 60-bed facility that provides a high level of care with short term and long term residents. A range of services are available, including wound care and physical therapy to support our elders as they recover from adverse medical events and conditions.
Tohono O’odham Elder Assisted Living Residence
Our elder assisted living residence is a close-knit community of just 10 beds with a highly favorable staff-to-resident ratio. It features private bed-and bathrooms, spacious common areas, and a range of enrichment services.
About Our Service to Our Nation
For decades, the elders of our Nation were forced to leave our community and go to non-O’odham facilities when they were in need of a skilled nursing facility or an assisted living residence. TONCA was formed for the purpose of bringing our elders back home to our Nation, enabling them to stay connected to loved ones and enjoy quality of life within our traditional Himdag. The Archie Hendricks Sr. Skilled Nursing Facility was founded thanks to the vision and determination of Archie Hendricks Sr., who wanted to give back to our Nation by empowering our elders to live with dignity and receive culturally aligned care. Later, TONCA opened the Tohono O’odham Elder Assisted Living Residence so that our elders can receive long-term care within our Nation.
