Differences Between Facilities

What’s the Difference Between Our Two Facilities?

The Tohono O’odham Nursing Care Authority (TONCA) operates two facilities: the Archie Hendricks Sr. Skilled Nursing Facility and the Tohono O’odham Elder Assisted Living Residence. We’re often asked to explain the differences between these two facilities, as many of our tribal members are unsure of which facility is best for them or their loved ones. Please use the following brief guide to inform your healthcare decisions.

Admissions

One of the differences between our two facilities concerns the admissions process. To be admitted to our skilled nursing facility, an elder must be referred by another healthcare facility (home admissions have been placed on pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.) The referral is reviewed by our Clinical Interdisciplinary Team to determine if we’re able to meet your loved one’s needs so the visit with us is productive and successful. However, admission to our elder assisted living residence is initiated by the elder and their loved ones.

Length of Stay

The assisted living residence is a place where our elders live out their remaining years with dignity and enhanced quality of life. The Archie Hendricks Sr. Skilled Nursing Facility is a short-term care facility. Our residents stay in this facility until they are medically able to return home to their loved ones. If they are not able to return home to their loved ones, we also provide long term care.

Purpose of Stay

The skilled nursing facility is intended to medically rehabilitate elders who are suffering from illnesses, injuries or wounds, with the intent of going home. Our elders typically come here after suffering a stroke, heart attack, injuries from a fall, or a similar adverse medical event. This facility also provides respite care and compassionate hospice services. Our assisted living residence is for elders who require limited healthcare services, ongoing medical monitoring, and personal care services, but if a resident is not able to return home, he is able to stay here long term.

Vision Statement

Our O’odham Elders live and die with dignity, in harmony with O’odham Himdag. With the help of the community, Elders live independently, make their own decisions and have access to the very best health care.

Guided by Tohono O’odham values and traditions, it shall be the mission of the Tohono O’odham Nursing Care Authority to take a leadership role in providing a continuum of care for elder members of the Tohono O’odham Nation and services designed to enhance the physical, spiritual, emotional, social, and intellectual qualities of life for aging O’odham and other members of the Nation in need of skilled nursing care, assisted living and hospice.

Purpose Statement

Our purpose as the Tohono O’odham Nursing Care Authority is to improve the quality of life for our residents to the highest standards possible while creating a positive and meaningful environment for staff.

We live our purpose everyday by caring for those who took care of us, while ensuring the physical, spiritual, emotional, social, intellectual qualities of life and that they live in a safe and secure environment.

We prove our commitment to our purpose by recognizing it is a privilege to spend this time with our O’odham Elders and other residents. We are committed to our responsibility to O’odham Centered Care, O’odham Himdag, O’odham language and cultural traditions through our open communication to our residents, their families and the people of the Tohono O’odham Nation.

We achieve our purpose by providing a healthy and well-maintained environment. We maximize our resident’s independence and participation in their own self-care, mobility, and safety awareness through dynamic and adaptive approaches to increase self-efficacy.

We acknowledge the importance of regulation and compliance in delivering the highest level of care, quality of life to the residents and thus fulfilling our purpose. We are here to serve our residents and their families the best we can, so they know “I care” “Man si pi:k ‘em-elid”.
